Is tiny Heed the world's smallest cat?

Could this be the world's smallest cat? The Guinness Book of Records is waiting until this little Munchkin kitten is fully grown to decide if he is a record breaker.

But Heed is well on track. At 14 weeks old he is just 3 1/4 inches tall, and weighs just over 2lbs.

Current record holder, Mr Peebles from Illinois, stands at 6.1 inches tall, and weighs 3.1 lbs. At eight weeks old, Heed could hide behind a tin can and he is still shorter than a roll of toilet paper.

His owner, Tiffani Kjeldergaard, 40, of Potrero, San Diego, explained: "Munchkins are a breed that have the same mutant gene as little people. But they usually weigh 3-5 lbs and stand at around 6 inches.

"Heed was one of a litter of seven and was the only one with this gene. His mother is a Munchkin and his father is a normal sized cat.

"We called him Heed because he was born with a big head and a tiny body and it reminded us of a line in a Mike Myers film called So I Married an Axe Murderer where he shouts in a Scottish accent, 'Look at the size of his heed!'"

Tiffani and her husband Stefan, a computer programmer, planned to have the whole litter adopted, but delayed the rehoming when the kittens all had a tummy bug.

"Then I noticed that Heed was not growing" said Tiffani. "When the others recovered we decided to hold onto him, in case he was still sick. We thought we might lose him." But Heed was soon in good health.

"He eats all day long," Tiffani said. "He even has a pot belly." Tiffani, who breeds cats, birds and horses, and also has a pet llama, contacted the Guinness Book of Records.

"They have sent me the documentation, so fingers crossed.

"Heed is a great little cat. He loves to rub noses with me when he's nervous, but I take him out everywhere with me and he loves it. He'll definitely be staying with us. This guy is kind of cool."

    Ice Cream Maker

What better way to beat the heat than a nice cooling and refreshing ice cream.
I'm huge ice cream eater and slurp ice cream kilowise. This year I decided to invest in an ice cream maker and have a go at making ice cream myself.
Ever since I got the ice cream maker, I have been experimenting with different flavors, mostly berries. This was my very first ice cream made with the maker and, I tell you, it was so easy and such a perfect quick summer time dessert or little in between snack.

    Ingredients:

300 g Strawberries - pureed. You can puree this to any consistency you like. I wanted a bit of frozen fruit in the ice cream so I just pureed this coarsely.
    50g - sugar
    250 natural, thick organic yoghurt

    Equipment: Ice cream maker

    Method:

In a mixing bowl blend together the sugar, yoghurt and strawberries. Cool for at least 6 hours in the fridge. Doing this makes the ice cream work better and fluffier.

Now add this to your ice cream maker and allow it to do it's thing, until you have a creamy smooth frozen yoghurt ice cream!

I am looking forward to more experiments with the ice cream maker and look forward to sharing them with you. In the meantime enjoy this cool refreshing treat!

    Save the lungfish!

The Australian lungfish (Neoceratodus forsteri) is one of our closest living fish relatives -- along with two other lungfishes. It is a threatened species, sadly, and is now being further threatened by the building of a dam. While I have been away, a campaign has started to stop the Australian authorities from proceeding with the construction of the dam on the Mary River. Please help save the lungfish, and I will continue to pester visitors periodically about this.

More information can be found here.

Pharyngula has a list of contacts you can write to to voice your concern -- please take a moment and do this. PZ also reported on the appearance of this story in the leading science journal, Nature.

*** But please sign the petition at this site.***

And even more importantly, spread the word!
